You have not ever been before? Well, even more reason to go :) And if you ignore the fact that Berlin people like to grumble at times, you should really enjoy it. They're all barks but no bites, haha. Have you planned what you want to go see in particular yet?

Well, people from my area are said to be very straightforward and gruff at times, so I'm curious about how that mixture will work :P I think the Berlin mentality might fit me just fine though.

Well, most of it. My dad's been to Berlin many times, so he's planned out a tour for us the first day (including Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, Hackische Höfe etc.). On the second day we're going to Potsdam and Sanscoussi. My inner literature geek is also curious to see Prenzlauer Berg to breathe some of that former Bohemian air.

That sounds like all the obligatory must-see's. Have fun. And pack plenty t-shirts if the weather says it's going to be fairly warm. When I was there it was super sticky and the worst was actually Sanscoussi. The park there has melting qualities and little shade. Anyway, have fun, you two. Did you get a good price for the train tickets after all?

It wasn't as bad as it could've been but the really early trains are sadly undoable for us because there are no busses here until 6AM, so we had to pay a bit more. The trains to Paris came rather cheap though.

Ah, US national parks. So many of them, so little time. By the way, actually saw a Texas travel guide at the store today. Made me think of you.

But 292 Euros? I'll only pay 88 there and back in an ICE thankfully. Unless they raise the prices again before I can book, as October is still blocked for booking. ;p

Ah, okay, I misread that. Sounds a bit more civil. Not much, though. For me, if they don't raise prices, it will be much cheaper by train than by plane, especially since I would have to get tickets for public transportation to get to/from the airports otherwise.

I really like that Berlin is so popular among my lj friends this year. I would have preferred if we would have been there at the same time, though. :D

Not really. Gas money alone would be about €110 round trip if you go by car. If you would have to rent a car, add 70€ for that and you're still under the train fare. And you can get plane tickets starting from €70 round trip. If DB wants to attract more customers they really have to lower their prices first. IMO. [all numbers relating to my particular route, of course]

Still, 218 is a bit more civil than 292. And if you do the math with a rented car, as I don't own one myself, it is 180 Euros to 218. And during a train ride you can do stuff (work, icon, read, whatever) while with a car you have to drive, which is something I don't like doing and so a waste of time for me. So I still prefer the train. And with your own car you have to add all that other costs a car makes proportionally (insurance, cost of purchase, taxes, repair costs etc.) and then you are well over 110 Euros as well, so it is not quite 100 Euro difference.

And just out of curiosity I did a search for plane tickets to Berlin and I could get one for 600 Euros. Wonder what is included in that flight to make it worth so much money. Can't just be the transportation. Or maybe they go over New York or something. ;)

Cheapest would be 29 Euros roundtrip, though. But I'd have to add 10 Euros for public transportation to and from our airport and probably about the same to get from and to the Berlin airport, so that would be 50 Euros and it would take me about two to three times longer with boarding and airport commute and everything. I think 88 Euros is an okay price from Hannover to Berlin and back, especially considering that I already pay 5,80 to get into Hannover and back again if I use public transportation here (which is why I usually use my scooter, cause that only costs 2 Euro gas money, plus maybe 1 Euro everything else).

What the DB really needs to work on is their service. Especially regarding being on time. Cause if one pays so much money for their transportation, they want to get where they want to get on time and not have to waste long hours (okay, mostly just minutes, but it adds up to hours) at the station waiting. Also, clerks who are friendly and like to help instead of grumpy people who treat you like a nuisance.

In short, for longer distances trains are my preferred way to travel.

Die DB brauch sich nicht wundern... wenn ich von Neuruppin nach Magdeburg will und nicht meine Bahncard 50 hätte, dann wären das 30€ pro Strecke... da wäre tanken billiger ... aber da ich nicht im Besitz eines Autos bin bleibt nur die DB und ich hab auf meiner Strecke noch nie nen Zug verpasst XD
Aber von Großstadt zu Großstadt ist das immens... voll teuer und dann hat man im ICE nich mal platz und Plätze werden doppelt bis dreifach vergeben (alles schon erlebt auf der Strecke Hannover - Berlin) ... oder ICEs werden ersatzlos gestricken und die gebuchten Platzkarten bekommt man nicht erstattet... da lobe man sich das Fliegen XD
